Our First Playwriting Day

Today, 21 March, we decided that we need to find a Full Day (8 am - 1 pm) without any other engagements. We also unanimously decided that choosing first Saturday of April will be a perfect day. I have planned 4 sessions on 2 April to write our first full play. Those who will miss the day will not be given any alternative day. Here is the summary of our proposed 4 sessions. 

Session 1: The Stage as a Unique Medium, Character and Conflict 

• Understanding the Stage - using the Stage's great capabilities and learning what makes Theatre different from Films. 
• Creating characters - find Method for building Characters that is right for you. 
• Tension of Opposites - Give your characters Tension and Dimension

Conflict - Placing the characters' Wants + Desires in opposition 

Session 2: Setting, Structure, & Question of the Play

• Setting - choosing the right When & Where for your play to begin with.
• Three-Act Structure - Beginning, Middle, and End - of your play.
• Alternate play structures - recognizing when your play may require a different organizing principle. 
• The Question of the play - keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. 

Session 3: Dialogue, Stage Direction, Format

• Dialogue - making each character's voice distinctive + memorable
• Punctuation - secret of making your intentions clear.
• Exposition - controlling flow of information to keep your Play moving and your Audience engaged. 
• Stage Directions - communicating the action clearly and succinctly (brief & sharp).
• Formatting - giving your play that professional look. 

Session 4: Rewriting & (What to do Next)

• The Writer's Web - elements to explore to turn a Good Play into a Great Play. 
• What to do next - Why and wherefores of play development and submission.

Our Works Today and Yesterday (20 & 21 March)

 We did two major things yesterday. 

1. We discussed a hand-note based on the chapter titled "Psychoanalytic Criticism" by Peter Barry in his famous book "Beginning Theory".
2. We discussed a few Literary Terms such as -Simile, Metaphor, Metonymy, Personification, Extended Metaphor, Synecdoche, Symbol etc.

Today we started with a short Review of Words and Phrases sent by Nasrin Sultana (Anu). First we talked about Ozymandias while discussing Colossus. Then we moved to a discussion of the poem in detail and later briefly made a short reference to "Love song of J. Alfred Prufrock." It is to be well understood that this poem is an excellent example of Modernist writing and especially in discussion of Psychoanalysis, this Eliotian poem is a great resource. I hope to do this poem in MUCH more detail in one of our later classes. Today I also gave a short list of Major western plays and a novel set in Colonial India. These plays have online film versions, so watching will not be an issue.

2. Suddenly Last Summer (Tennessee Williams)
3. Top Girls (Cyril Churchill)
4. Three Plays by Stoppard - Arcadia (based on theories of Thermodynamics); Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead (based on theory of mathematical Probability); Indian Ink
5. Heat and Dust - this is a novel based on some incident in British Colonial India
6. The Importance of Being Earnest - this is a Major Play of late 19th Century that set the standard of elitist theatre.

Yesterday we largely spent our time in discussion of major Plays and major films that are necessary for a modern understanding of "elitist" culture. 

  

২০ এবং ২১ মার্চ, ২০২২ তারিখের ক্লাসের বিষয়বস্তু

 ২০ তারিখের ক্লাসে আমরা তিনটি বিষয় নিয়ে কথা বলব।

1. নাটক লেখার প্রয়োজনীয় প্রস্তুতির সংক্ষিপ্তসার 
2. নাটকে ব্যবহৃত সংক্ষিপ্ত পরিভাষা = এখানে লিঙ্ক
3. অলঙ্কার-শাস্ত্র (আমরা M. H. Abrams এর A Glossary of Literary Terms ব্যবহার করব। এখানে লিঙ্ক দেখুন।)। যে যে Terms আলোচনায় থাকবে -
• Simile = নাটকে এর ব্যবহার
• Metaphor = নাটকে এর ব্যবহার
• Personification = নাটকে এর ব্যবহার
• Symbol / Symbolism = নাটকে এর ব্যবহার
• Aside / Soliloquy = নাটকে এর ব্যবহার
• Imagery = নাটকে চিত্রকল্পের ব্যবহার
• Allegory = নাটকে এর ব্যবহার
• Irony (Verbal - Dramatic - Irony of Situation - Cosmic Irony / Irony of Fate) 
4. আমরা একটি গল্পাংশ এবং একটি কবিতা পড়ব। প্রত্যেককে Textbook দেয়া হবে। এই গল্পাংশ এবং কবিতাকে আমরা নাট্য-কথনে রুপান্তর করব। 
5. গল্পাংশ / কবিতাকে নাট্য-কথনে রুপান্তর Marking Classwork হিসাবে গ্রহন করা হবে। 

 ২১ তারিখের ক্লাসে আমরা আরো দু'টি বিষয় নিয়ে কথা বলব।  

1. প্রথমতঃ আমরা একটি পড়ার পর এর উপর ভিত্তি করে কি লেখা যায় তা আলোচনা করব। এক্ষেত্রে আমরা বিগত ক্লাসে Submission করা ৩টি লেখা বিশ্লেষন করব। 
2. আমরা ৫০টি গুরুত্তপূর্ন English Academic Vocabulary শিখে নেব।  Vocabulary Sheet সরবরাহ করা হবে।

নীম্নোক্ত প্রসঙ্গগুলো আজ আমাদের ক্লাসের পরিসরে আলোচিত হয়েছে। তবে বিস্তারিত বিবরন আমি আগামীকালের মধ্যে দেয়ার চেষ্টা করব। 

1. Tabula Rasa = এই প্রস্তাবনার মধ্য দিয়ে আমরা বুঝতে চেয়েছি কিভাবে একজন লেখক তাঁর পারিপার্শিক অবস্থা সম্পর্কে জ্ঞান আহরণ করে নিজেকে সমৃদ্ধ করেন। এই সমৃদ্ধি কিভাবে তাঁর লেখাতে প্রতিবিম্বিত হয় সেটা আমরা একটি লিখন-চর্চার মধ্য দিয়ে বোঝার চেষ্টা করেছি। 
2. Epistemology = এই বিষয়ে বিস্তারিত আসছে।
3. Problems of Philosophy (Bertrand Russell): we discussed Appearance and Reality, a priori এবং a posteriori যুক্তি-র সহজ বর্ননা। যা আপাতদৃষ্টিতে প্রতীয়মান (Appearance) এবং যা সত্য (Reality) - এই দুইয়ের ব্যখ্যায় আমি আবারো "So much depends upon, the red wheelbarrow" উল্লেখ করেছি। এই মৌলিক দার্শনিক তত্বটি প্লেটো-র Allegory of Cave দ্বারা অসাধারনভাবে বর্ণিত। বিস্তারিত আসছে।
4. প্রসঙ্গে আরো পড়েছি তাঁর What I have Lived For (1952) এবং How to be a man of genius (1932)। বিশেষ করে "What I have Lived For" পড়ার সময় সবার উৎসাহী মন্তব্য আনন্দদায়ক ছিল নিঃসন্দেহে। 
5. Writing WITHOUT preconceived Ideas: এটাই ছিলো আজ আমাদের মূল বিষয়। এর আওতায় আমরা প্রত্যেকেই একটি করে প্রিন্ট-ইমেজ হাতে পেয়ে ব্যাখা করেছি। এই ব্যাখা লিখতে হয়েছে একটি ফুলস্কেপ কাগজের স্প্রেডশিট-এ। চমৎকার কিছু লেখা পেয়েছি, যা আগামী ক্লাসে মার্কিং সহ ফেরত দেয়া হবে।
6. Using LinkedIn for developing Professional identity = লিঙ্কড-ইন ব্যাবহার নিয়ে আজ উপস্থিত কয়েকজনকে দায়িত্ব দেয়া হয়েছে যাতে তারা ইএমকে সেন্টারের প্রস্তাবিত একটি ওয়ার্কশপ-এ অংশ নেন এবং পরবর্তী ক্লাসে অন্যান্যদের এই বিষয়ে অবহিত করেন। 
7. The Colonial Capitalist curation of 'Bangla' Culture = আমরা খুব সংক্ষিপ্ত পরিসরে এই আর্টিকেলটির মাধ্যমে কালচারাল পলিটিক্স এর সহজে বোধগম্য কিছু বিষয়ে আলোচনা করেছি। এর মধ্যে এ-অ ছিল যে, একজন শিল্পী কখন পুঁজিবাদের (ক্যাপিটালিসম) সমর্থন করবেন এবং কখন করবেন না।
8. Coursera = Theatre and Globalization কোর্সেরা-র এই বিশেষ কোর্সটি কিভাবে করা যায় সে বিষয়ে আমরা আলোচনা করেছি। তবে বিস্তারিত আগামী ক্লাসে ডেমন্সট্রেট করা হবে। 
9. ক্লাসে নিকিতা আজম অনুরোধ করেছেন যে উত্থাপিত বিষয়গুলো এবং রেফেরেন্সগুলো-র লিঙ্ক যাতে এখানে দেয়া হয়। আমি চেষ্টা করছি এই পরামর্শ অনুসরন করে আগামীকালের মধ্যে আপডেট দিতে। 
10. কোন এক প্রসঙ্গে আমরা "Reading Lolita in Tehran" বইটা উল্লেখ করেছি। এই বিষয়ে কেউ চাইলে আরো পড়তে পারেন। 
11. বুধবারের ক্লাসটি নেয়া সম্ভব হচ্ছে না। সেই কারনে একটি ছোট এসাইনমেন্ট ঘোষণা করা হবে আগামীকাল। এটি হবে মার্কিং ওয়ার্ক।

Todays Meeting Contents

 আজ ২ মে আমরা দ্বিতীয়বার ক্লাসে কিছু বিষয় আলোচনা করেছি। এর মধ্যে প্রধান বিষয়গুলো নিম্নে উল্লেখিত হলো।

1. গত ক্লাসের কবিতা "রেড হুইল ব্যারো" নিয়ে সংক্ষিপ্ত রেফারেন্স / আলোচনা। কবিতায় কিভাবে মাইক্রোকসমিক লেভেল এর মধ্য দিয়ে ম্যাক্রোকসমিক বিশ্বের ধারনা পাচ্ছি সেটা দেখলাম। 
2. আমাদের মূল পাঠ ছিলো - গতকালের "ডেইলি স্টার" পত্রিকায় প্রকাশিত একটি ছোট আর্টিকেল। এই আর্টিকেল-টা আমরা পুঙ্খানূপুঙ্খ-ভাবে পড়েছি এবং সবাই মিলে ব্যাখ্যা করেছি। 
3. "Race with the Machine" নামের এই আর্টিকেলটিতে ব্যাখা করা হয়েছে আগামী পৃথিবীর জন্য কি ধরনের দক্ষতা দরকার। এর মধ্যে একটি দক্ষতা, যা মেশিন লার্নিং এর পক্ষে করা সম্ভব না - তাঁর নাম ক্রিয়েটিভ রাইটিং। ক্লাসের পরিবেশে এই আলোচনা একটা চমৎকার ডিবেট-এর আবহ তৈরি করেছিল। যারা আজকে উপস্থিত ছিলেন তাঁদের অনুরোধ জানানো যাচ্ছে যে তারা এই বিষয়ে অনুপস্থিতদের সাহায্য করবেন। সবার জন্য এই লেখাটির প্রিন্ট সরবরাহ করা হয়েছে।
4. এর পরেই আমরা শুরু করলাম Pride and Prejudice উপন্যাসের পাঠ। আমরা ক্লাসে ৩টা এডিশন নিয়ে কাজ করেছি। একটি খুবই সহজলভ্য; ঢাকার নীলক্ষেতে অবস্থিত Friend's Book - এটা বের করেছে । আমি এনেছিলাম পেঙ্গুইন বুকস এর দেশীয় রিপ্রিন্ট। তবে ক্লাসে কাজ করার সময় আমরা Cambridge Edition of Jane Austen অনলাইন এডিশন ব্যাবহার করেছি। এই এডিশনটি সরাসরি ডাউনলোড-যোগ্য নয়। তবে কেউ নিতে চাইলে আমাকে জানাতে পারেন। 
5. আমাদের আজকের সবচেয়ে গুরুত্তপূর্ন কাজ ছিলো - Pride and Prejudice উপন্যাসের প্রথম দুই অধ্যায় শেষ করে ফেলা। পাঠ চলাকালীন সময়ে সবার প্রচুর আমোদপূর্ন হাসি আমাকে উজ্জীবিত করে রেখেছিল।
6. এর বাইরে আমরা দুটি কবিতা পড়লাম - (১) অডেন এর কবিতা "Night Mail", (২) কিটস এর কবিতা "Ode on a Grecian Urn", (৩) শেক্সপীয়রের সনেট "Shall I compare thee to a Summer's Day"। সনেট এর আলোচনায় ৩টা কোয়ার্টেট এবং ১টা কাপলেট এর সমন্বয়ে ১৪ লাইনের সনেট এর কাঠামো আলোচনা করেছি। 
7. আমাদের পরবর্তী নির্ধারিত ক্লাস আগামী সোমবার (৭ মার্চ)। সকাল ৯.৪০ মিনিটে শুরু হওয়া এই ক্লাসের ব্যপ্তি হবে ৪ ঘন্টা। ২.৩০ ঘন্টা পর ৩০ মিনিটের বিরতি থাকবে। এই ক্লাসের বিষয়বস্তু এবং এসাইনমেন্ট-পরিকল্পনা দুই-এক দিনের মধ্যে এই ব্লগের পোস্টে জানানো হবে। এই গুরুত্তপূর্ণ সেশনটি অনুপস্থিত না থাকার জন্য বিশেষভাবে অনুরোধ করা হলো।
